Will Lincoln County Get a Library?

If you didn't know, there is a group in Lincoln County trying to start a library for the county. They are called Lincoln County Friends of the Library and the group was created by the Lincoln County Commission in Oct. of '07 and have 5 years to get this issue of a county library tax going. In honor of that, I pulled a story from Freakanomics from last year. The article, "If Public Libraries Didn’t Exist, Could You Start One Today?", explores how funny it is that we have these companies complaining about copyright issues, yet we have this great thing called the library system.

Lauren Dean, of Coldwater, Michigan, was missing for three weeks before she walked into a Coldwater police station on July 30. Apparently, she ran way from home to meet Daniel Knopp of Troy. Knopp, 20, met Dean, 16, through Myspace. Who would have thought that young love could blossom on Myspace? The main stream media made me think only sexual predators could be found there.

Connector Road Route Proposed

Here's an article about this proposed route for the connector road south of Troy. The story says that the road would go south from Hwy 47, then west over Hwy 61 and connect to Linns Mill Road on the other side. If you think this sound ridiculous, try going to the Gmap-Pedometer mashup site and see what a seven-mile road along that route would look like. The city paid $130,000 for someone to come up with this idea. I know my opinion isn't worth $130,000 but, I would think utilizing the new Hwy C overpass would be a better idea for everyone. Here's a map of the area. Wouldn't is be easier to just connect C to Hwy J via Elm Tree Road?

Shafer Update: Game Tied 0-0 Bottom of the 7th

Aaron Shafer got out of a jam in the top of the 7th with the bases loaded and two outs, getting a pop out to center to end the inning. The Wichita State pitching coach was tossed after WSU thought Shafer had gotten a strikeout on a breaking ball to end the inning. Shafer then got the next batter to fly out to center to end the innings on the second pitch of the at-bat.
Shafer has pitched 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, and striking out 5. Of those 5 hits, 4 were singles. He also walked two batters. With around 90 pitches, Shafer is likely done for the day.

Monty's BBQ is a Troy fixture on South Lincoln Drive. If there is a one item that goes hand in hand with living in Troy, it's the MontyBurger. I am quite fond of the $1 hotdogs. They are good and. . .well. . only a dollar. I have also heard that the chicken is good although I haven't tried it. There isn't all that much to write about a BBQ stand, the food really speaks for itself. If you taste for BBQ, go to Monty's stand.

***I dined at the newest restaurant in Troy shortly after it opened, but I am just now posting my review.***

I had a Rueben sandwich and a bowl of chicken and dumpling soup. I liked the fact that with my sandwich I could add a bowl of soup for only a dollar, which could possibly be that I am a sucker for things that are a dollar. The Rueben itself was good except for the fact that there was no 1000 island dressing on the sandwich. I informed the host of the lack of 1000 island when I went to pay and she checked on it and said that it was a miscommunication between the server and the kitchen. Apparently, the sandwich is supposed to be served with a side of 1000 island dressing.
Personally, I would prefer that the server ask when you order if you would like the dressing on the side or on the sandwich. The soup was alright. I don't really have chicken and dumplings a lot so I can't really critique it.
The prices are about average for a family-style restaurant, I think I spent about $10 for the soup, sandwich and drink. The other items on the menu all seemed to be priced pretty average. I didn't really see anything on the menu that stood out.
If you are curious about why the restaurant name sounds so ethnic it is because Zadock Woods was one of the two men behind Wood's Fort in 1799. I overheard a waitress say that when the restaurant owners went to the City, they were encouraged to use the name, Zadock's. The layout of the restaurant is nice with a fireplace in the middle of the dining area and tables along the wall that faces Hwy 47. Here's a link to the story of the Woods family.
Overall, I think the restaurant wasn't really anything to write home about. I haven't dined at Landmark lately, but I would imagine the two are a lot alike. Most of the things I saw on the menu seemed pretty plain. The restaurant needs more things and dishes to distinguish itself.

Shafer Picks Up a Big Win for Wichita State

TBHS Alum Aaron Shafer went 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs, in picking up a win for Wichita State over New Orleans on Sunday afternoon. Shafer threw 81 pitches in the game.
The Shockers, seeded #1 in the Wichita State Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament, were upset by New Orleans in the opening game of the Regional and now bring a 2-1 record into a game with Arizona (2-0) at 7 pm tonight. Should the Shockers beat Arizona tonight, the teams would play Monday evening at 7 pm to determine who moves on to the Super Regional.

Well, I noticed some good deals in the Aldi ad this week that came in my Lincoln County Journal. Then I remember that we don't currently have an Aldi here in Troy. The nearest Aldi location is 21.47 miles away according to the Aldi website. The plan for the Troy location is to build a bigger location in the same spot. It was cheaper for the company to just knock the building down and rebuild then to expand on the existing structure. It must be quite an upgrade if it was that much cheaper. I don't know the expected timetable yet for the new building though.

Ya know, I am just about fed up with the Lincoln County Journal. I know they have done a lot for Lincoln County in the fact that they are the source of information for a lot of people and give exposure to people in the county, but seriously here are some things I wonder about:

What are they doing with the advertising money from the website?
--They advertise the heck out of the website but what is really on it? I mean sure there are lot of ads on the website, so they have to be raking in some money from it, but what is really on it?

Why is with the front page of the Sports section this week?
--The majority of the above the fold space is taken up by track results. Not a story, but track results submitted by a coach.

Does anyone proofread?
--In the article about Richard Rose signing with Lindenwood: "he lead the South division" . No, that would be "he led the South".

--On the inside back page, the '06-'07 All-County Basketball Teams are featured. A Kourtney Gibson made the Girls' 2nd team. That one even comes up as misspelled in my web browser.

--On the front page of the Main Section: "City leaders finalized plans to purchase Troy Baptist Church" Wow, so they are just purchasing the whole congregation? I would think that the correct wording would have been "City leaders finalized plans to purchase the building currently occupied by Troy First Baptist Church".

Charles Cunningham, of Foley, was sued yesterday by Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon. He was cited on March 28, 2005 for openly burning tires in his yard, which violates the Missouri Air Conservation Law. Jay Nixon is not someone you want to cross paths with. I would expect this to end badly for the guy not named Nixon.

King Edward's Fried Chicken

The newest restaurant in Troy is the newest location for King Edward's Fried Chicken, which has been on South Duchesne in St. Charles since 1966. Mike and Tina Hickman have owned the St. Charles location since 1999 and own the location in Troy. In St. Charles, the restaurant sells nearly 10,000 pieces of chicken a week and 200 pounds of catfish. King Edward's brings in fresh white-skinned chicken daily before cutting, breading, and frying it themselves.

I stopped in at King Edward's over the weekend after hearing about it earlier in the day. It felt alot like walking into the Soup Nazi's place on an episode of Seinfeld. It was tough deciding amongst all the glorious fried goodies, including catfish, cod, shrimp, froglegs, clam strips and salmon in addition to chicken. I finally went with the chicken strips and fries for $5.39. King Edward's offers a vast menu of side items including red beans and rice, corn on the cob, and mashed potatoes.

The breading was light and the strips were excellent. Ive never tasted so much chicken rather than breading. The strips were even good cold the next day, which is an excellent attribute. I will definitely be stopping back in soon. I might try the lunch special of 4 mixed pieces of fried chicken, fries and a drink for $4.97, mainly because it sounds like such a sweet deal.

King Edward's Fried Chicken is located in Oakley Plaza along with River's Edge Pizza off of HWY 47. The restaurant is open 11 am -7 pm Mon-Sat. The menu is available on their website

TBHS Express Named Grand Champion

Over the weekend, the TBHS Express Show Choir received the Grand Champion award at the Chicagoland Showcase Show Choir Competition. Troy also received the Best Choreography award.

Gun At William R. Cappel

This has not been a very good couple of months for William R. Cappel Elementary. First a student is hit by a falling beam and now a second grader brings a gun to school. The kid brought a loaded .22 to school on Wednesday. The parents were charged Thursday. They apparently had over 80 unsecured weapons at their home. The second grader didn't attempt to use the gun, he just showed it to another student. A third student overheard and reported it to the teacher.

Questions to ponder:

Who has 80 weapons?

Does this kid need a whoopin' or what?

Shouldn't someone take the parents behind the woodshed and give them a whoopin' too?

Trent Tomlinson Coming to Troy, Missouri?

A newly added listing on Pollstar lists Trent Tomlinson as the newest edition to the 2007 Lincoln County Fair lineup.

The listing however, says Tomlinson will be performing on Tuesday, 7/17. Traditionally, the fair runs from from the second Tuesday in July until the second Saturday in July. That would make Tomlinson's performance on July 10. Tomlinson's official website also lists the performance as the 17th.

What Is Going On On 61?

Today is the day that MODOT starts taking down part of the Route. A bridge over 61 in Wentzville.

Schedule of Closures

Rt. 61 under the bridge: 10 pm Fri-4 am Mon
Rt. A bridge will be closed during that time except for Sat. 10 am-7 pm

Here's how they will redirect traffic

While the Route A bridge is closed, travelers on westbound Route A will be able to make a right hand turn only onto northbound Route 61 and travelers on eastbound Route A will be able to make a right hand turn only onto southbound Route 61. Motorists on westbound Route A who want to travel south on Route 61 must turn right onto northbound Route 61 and will be able to make a legal U-turn at a crossover about ½ mile up northbound Route 61.

If you are traveling South on 61 towards St. Charles, I suggest taking Point Prairie Rd. off 61. Point Prairie will take you to West Pearce in Wentzville, where you can get on Hwy. 70. From Point Prairie, you can also take a left on West Meyer Rd., which will take you to Wentzville Parkway.

If you are traveling from St. Charles on Hwy. 70 I suggest taking 70 to the Wentzville Parkway Exit. Take Wentzville Parkway to the West Meyer Rd. stoplight. Make a left onto W. Meyer and follow it to Point Prarie. Make a right on Point Prarie and it will take you to Hwy. 61. You can also make a left from Wentzville Parkway onto West Pearce. This will take you alongside Hwy. 70. Make a right onto Point Prarie and that will take you to 61.

Show Choirs Compete at Mt. Zion Competition

Both TBHS Show Choirs, Express and Soundwave, competed at the Mt. Zion, Illinois competition over the weekend. Photos can be viewed here. Here is a website that lets you buy discounted gift certificates for area restaurants. Certificates can only be redeemed Sun-Thurs at participating restaurants. Each restaurant has different stipulations. Featured area restaurants are Harry J's, Chihuahua's, and Stefania's. Chihuahua's offers a $10 gift card for $3 and you have to spend $15 in order to use the $10 certificate. So, theoretically, you can get a $15 meal for $8. Harry J's and Stefania's both offer $25 certificates for $10 with $45 and $35 spending requirements, respectively.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is pursuing the idea that Michael Devlin, the man who allegedly snatched Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck, was also involved n the kidnapping of Arlin Henderson from Moscow Mills 16 years ago. This according to an Associated Press story filed some 25 minutes ago.

I was just thinking about setting up a messageboard for this site a couple days ago and then I get an email from the "Commish" over at lcmo.net. Why create one here when I could just direct people there to get their messageboarding on? I am a huge fan of the layout of the site and the ease of use. I have tried several times to get the Lincoln County Journal to put message boards on their site, but I have now given up. Moscow Mills Audit Complete

The audit of the City of Moscow Mills was recently made available by the State Auditor's office. The audit basically said that whoever was handling the finances for the city in the last year or so didn't do a very good job. Among other things, the city underbilled for water; probably shouldn't have paid for funeral flowers, a christmas party or bonuses for full-time city employees; and generally took on way more debt than it should have.

Walgreens has finally gotten the okay from the Planning and Zoning Comission to build in Troy. I believe the building will be at the intersection of Lincoln and 47 where Coose Realty was. A typical Walgreens will employ 20-25 people. The Troy Walgreens likely won't be a 24-hour operation.

Troy Native Gives SLU A Win

Gerry Pollard, a '79 graduate of Buchanan High, was the deciding factor in the SLU Mens Basketball team's 51-50 come-from-behind victory over Missouri State on Monday. Pollard, the head official, was forced to review an Ian Vouyoukas (SLU) tip-in at the buzzer that gave SLU the win. It was originally ruled that the tip came after the final buzzer, but, ironically enough, the game was televised on a Springfield, MO station which gave the officials the opportunity to review the video of the play. After numerous viewings, Pollard ruled that the play was good and SLU would be 9-2 heading into Friday's contest with North Carolina at ScottTrade.

Here are several stories on the horrible accident Thursday morning in Moscow Mills. Thank god the little girl is ok. The school district wasted little time in blaming the construction company for the accident. Last time I checked placing blame that quick doesn't help matters any. Just move the kids and teachers away from the construction like they should have been in the first place.

Heartland Coming To Troy Along With Vassar

The country group Heartland is the latest addition to the 2007 Lincoln County Fair lineup. The addition was made on Pollstar within the last 24 hours. Heartland exploded onto the country music scene just a few short months ago with the hit, "I loved her first". Phil Vassar is also scheduled for Saturday night, July 14.

Apparently a group of people in Troy are looking to get a small regional airport built in town. Somehow they got a $100,000 grant from the State, which is being used to pay a firm out of the Northeast to conduct a study to figure out if Troy needs an airport like this. Troy Resident Earns Post Season Soccer Honor

Grant Ellison, a Troy resident and Senior at St. Dominic, was recently named a Co-Player of the Year on the Class 2 All-State Soccer Team as selected by the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association. Ellison scored 27 goals over the course of the recently completed season as the Crusaders finished 16-12 and 2nd in Class 2.

I found out the big KFAV secret today from Mr. KFAV himself and let me tell you, it's gonna be big. It will be the best thing to happen to Troy since . . . well. . . .probably since the Wal-Mart SuperCenter opened. I won't divulge the secret yet, but just wait a month or so and you will see.
