Lincoln County Journal [Jun 12, 2006]

I moved to Troy a long, long time ago. . .I can still remember when, the music. . I mean yeah, a while ago, back when gas was under $2 and Troy had two golf courses and a bowling alley.

Even back then I was a news junkie and read the Lincoln County Journal every week. I would always think to myself, "PT, I really hope this paper gets better" Well, I gave up on that idea. It's still pretty much news releases edited slightly and news about someone's nephew's cousin's brother who probably doesn't even know they have relatives in Troy, Missouri. Add a letter here and there from someone with a bone to pick and you have the majority of the paper.

A while ago the paper was sold to a company apparently called Lakeway Publishers. Now the paper has a new component that while a good idea with one good part, really makes me laugh. We'll start with the good idea and good part:

put the paper on the internet---> good idea

digital edition of the paper---> good part

The part that makes me laugh? It seems there is an ad on every page of the paper saying "Hey, go to www.lincolncountyjournal.com". The fact is the website is absolutly horrible. I took Computer Apps 3 three times in my days at TBHS (ahh, the beauty of a Troy education) and I saw better websites created by freshmen. You mean to tell me someone actually got paid to design this? Someone please call the police, this someone is obviously taking money they haven't earned. Not only is the website design bad, the one article from each section (if that)that is on the page gets thrown up without any apparent editing whatsoever. Can someone please give me a decent line break or an indentation?

The site is littered with local ads, giving the site the look that it seems to be going for: A site that isn't interested in content, just ad revenue. And whatever you do people, don't waste your time checking out the Smokey Mountain Marketplace.

Not only is the LCJ website bad, this Lakeway Publishers uses the same template for each paper they own. So they go from making one website suck to exposing many parts of rural Missouri and Tennessee to their crap. Check out what I am talking about here

I love to voice my opinion, but I also like to offer solutions. My solution to this problem? Lakeway should sell the LCJ and whatever else they can to the Suburan Journals so Troy can finally be a part of the Suburban Journals. Anyone with me?
