Saturday Night Music Review [Jul 16, 2006]
I was rather surprised Cowboy Crush made it to Troy to play on the Main Stage at the Fair at all. Trenna, the lead vocalist, had no clue where she was in Missouri, just that she was somewhere in the state. I say this because not once did she mention Troy, electing instead to just refer to everything as Missouri. She also asked if there were any KFVA fans in the house, and surprisingly few people hooted and hollered. Maybe it was the fact that she read the wrong letters? I don't know.
However, she gets a free pass because of the way she is on stage and the fact that Cowboy Crush just got back from touring Europe and singing for the Red, White, and Blue's finest.
Anyways, they put on a pretty good show. They don't have a real cd out, just a 2 song sampler cd available for $5. I'd suggest waiting till their full cd comes out soon. "I'm Coming Home" hit the mark in this conservative hotbed with its lyrics about a soldier off at war. "Hillbilly Nation" found its target among the Lincoln County folk in the audience. Look for this group to be big with the right song selections. Think of them as the anti-liberal improvement on the Dixie Chicks plus two chicks.
Sawyer Brown didn't dissapoint as the main act. They started off a little slow in my opinion when they just went song to song without really any fan interaction. Just when they were about to lose some folks, they came through. The band reached way back to 1983 to kick the show into high gear.
In 1983, Sawyer Brown was just a struggling band that needed a videotape to promote their work. The answer? Audtion for Star Search and use the audition tape. Their idea worked out better than could have ever been imagined when they won the competition and took home the $100,000 prize along with the recording contract.
I wondered throughout the show if Mark Miller has patented his dyslexic dance moves. I really don't know how else you could describe the way that guys moves on stage. I've heard the music just flows through some people. Well, the music flows through this guy something funky. He'll leave you wondering, What the heck is he doing? How the heck is he doing that? and How the heck is he still doing it after 25 years of performing?
Sawyer Brown mixed old songs and new throughout the show and even covered some songs.Go out and buy their new cd, Mission Temple Fireworks Stand and pick up a greatest hits cd while you're there.
